HowDoYou Guide explores topics, and helps you explore topics. Our focus is on creating quality, thoughtful guides that you can rely on and come back to, rather than churning out a constant stream of “Content” that you read once and forget about.
Our Process
We explore and compile information at three levels:
- Deep Dives - A thorough exploration of a topic. This might involve us taking classes, working jobs, volunteering, traveling, talking with experts, etc. If the exploration seems like something we can guide a reader through, this can culminate in a book or other long-form publication.
- Short-Form Guides - Drawn from what we learn in a deep dive. Blog-post-length guides that give practical advice about how you might engage in a topic yourself.
- Quick Reference - Charts, graphics, and other at-a-glance reference material. Sized anywhere from a business card to a single printed page.
Other Nice Things
Throughout the discovery process, we might compile other useful materials, including:
- Reference Lists - Resources, books, organizations, etc.
- FAQs - Sometimes a topic, especially remotely controversial (some people seem rather OK with kids getting run over by cars, apparently), might spawn questions that come up often. “What about _____”? We collect responses, preferring to direct you to expert sources rather than “because we say so.”
- Stories - A particular experience or example that may illustrate the inner workings of a topic.
Paying the Bills
We are not a charitable organization, and therefore have bills to pay, mouths to feed. We’re not keen on tracking users, selling data, or farming clicks; we would rather gain a reputation as a trusted source of information.
- Guides - Books, Quick Reference guides.
- Merchandise - Items inspired by our guides. Charts printed on stickers and T-shirts, etc.
- Promotional Links - We may link to others’ products or services which we find useful and recommend. Any link we receive compensation for (whether for posting the link or as a commission) will be clearly labeled.
- Workshops - We explore things with you, live in person or online.
Custom Requests
We can also facilitate requests for your needs. This can include…
- Branded Material - Modification of our existing product lines to feature your brand. For example, stickers or coasters featuring your bar’s logo and specialty drinks, or a “How To Choose a Cocktail” guide that features your liquor brand.
- Custom Guides - Commissioned guides for subject matter that we do not currently cover. We prefer to retain the rights to publish said material ourselves as well.
- Bulk Discounts - Want to buy a couple thousand copies of our bartending book for graduates of your bartending school? Contact for bulk pricing.
- Consulting - Any other area where our skillset may be of use. Contact for rates.
AI Philosophy
None* of the content on this site is AI-generated. This isn’t some knee-jerk reaction to AI, rather a deliberate choice for the site.
It would be very easy to generate a lot of our content using AI, but then why would you come to us? Our value proposition is that our guides, however imperfect, have been written, vetted, and tested by human beings.
AI is very effective at producing large blocks of content that is probably accurate and sounds good. That’s fine for a high school literature essay**, but not when it’s 6 below zero and you’re waiting for a bus in Altoona, PA, wondering if it’s going to arrive.
Also, we just really like to write. Why let some data center in Iowa have all the fun?
*There may be a lingering DALL-E image or two somewhere that we were playing with before the site launched. We think we’ve removed all of them, but it’s possible a couple escaped our sweep.
**HowDoYou Guide does not condone using AI for high school literature essays.
